Common Uses
Nortrilen is a second generation tricyclic antidepressant. It is used in the treatment of depression and childhood nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting). In addition it is sometimes used for chronic pain modification, migraine, and labile affect in some neurological conditions.
How to Take
Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication. Follow the directions on your prescription label. For depression: low starting doses are used, increasing as necessary to 75–100mg (0–50mg for adolescents and the elderly). Maximum daily dosage is 150mg.
Warning and Precautions
Nortrilen may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Nortrilen with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (eg, sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using Nortrilen; it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness.
Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include extreme drowsiness, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, blurred vision, vomiting, muscle stiffness, feeling hot or cold, fainting, seizure. Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.
Storage
Store Nortrilen at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep out of the reach of children and away from pets.
Possible Side Effects
The side effects are: dry mouth, drowsiness, orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention, constipation, and rapid or irregular heartbeat. Some sexual side effects may be a problem as well. Less serious side effect may be more likely to occur, such as: seizures, especially in overdose.
