Common Uses
Cefixime is an antibiotic in a class of drugs called cephalosporins. Cefixime fights bacteria in the body. It is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, tonsillitis, ear infections, skin infections, gonorrhea, and urinary tract infections.
Cefixime may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
How to Take
For bacterial infections:
Adults and teenagers - 200 mg every twelve hours, or 400 mg once a day. Gonorrhea is treated with a single, oral dose of 400 mg.
Children 6 months to 12 years of age - 4 mg per kg (1.81 mg per pound) of body weight every twelve hours, or 8 mg per kg (3.63 mg per pound) of body weight once a day.
Infants up to 6 months of age - Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.
Warning and Precautions
Take all of the Cefixime that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. Take Cefixime with food or milk if it causes stomach upset.
Cefixime is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not, however, take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. It is unknown whether Cefixime passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
Contact your local poison control center, or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include seizures.
Storage
Store Cefixime at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. It may also be stored in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). Do not freeze. Throw away any unused medicine after 14 days. Keep Cefixime out of the reach of children and away from pets.
Possible Side Effects
The common side effects of Cefixime are: diarrhea; gas; loose stools; nausea; stomach pain or upset.
